On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, a gunman opened fire through the stained glass windows of the church. Inside, children ages 6-12, teachers, church staff, parents, and elderly parishioners were attending a back-to-school mass.
Beyond the physical injuries, the shooting impacted the mental health of all those at the mass, their families, and the surrounding community. The University of Minnesota Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) provided disaster behavioral health support for a 10-day period.
This session will be co-presented by Courtney Wetternach, MPH and Angela Lewis-Dmello, LICSW. Courtney will share specifics about the MRC deployment process, provide an administrative review, and describe how the U of M MRC coordinated with the response agencies involved. Angela will discuss the mental health needs of those impacted, and how they were addressed, through her expert lens of both practice and research.
