These days, it can feel confusing and overwhelming to keep up with changes in health recommendations. But when it comes to staying healthy from seasonal respiratory illness, the science is clear and well-established:
- Get vaccinated.
- Wash your hands.
- Stay home if you’re sick.
Get Vaccinated, Be Protected
Flu and COVID-19
The influenza vaccine is recommended for all people ages 6 months and older.
The Minnesota Department of Health supports the COVID-19 vaccine recommendations from leading science and medicine associations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). These associations recommend that all people over 6 months old should be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine without additional barriers. There is a strong recommendation for children under 2 years, pregnant women, children and adults with high-risk conditions, and adults age 65 and older to get vaccinated.
On the Twin Cities Campus, students, staff, faculty and dependents can get the flu and COVID Vaccines at upcoming campus clinics. Explore your options here.
Measles
Measles outbreaks are on the rise, including in Minnesota. Make sure you are up to date on your measles vaccine, usually called MMR. Measles is a highly contagious disease, but full vaccination is 97% effective at preventing the disease.
RSV and Pneumonia
Depending on your age and health, you may also be a candidate to receive the RSV and the pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccines. Ask your primary healthcare professional what’s right for you.
Care for Yourself, Protect Your Community
Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly (20+ seconds) with soap and warm water. If you don’t have access to those, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Stay home if you’re sick: see the absence policies for students or employees.
Cover your coughs and sneezes. Wearing a well-fitting, multi-layered mask is still a good way to do this.
